Hi, I'm Hannah

Hi, I'm Hannah

I'm a postpartum doula serving Santa Cruz County and surrounding areas. I am certified through Doulas of North America (DONA International).

After working with children for over ten years, I decided to expand my expertise to include the postpartum period for newborns and mothers. I love the wonder and curiosity of children - which starts during the first hour of life! And I am passionate about mother care, which has a transformative effect on the family during the transition of a new baby.

I live in the hills of Soquel with my husband and enjoy walking on East Cliff and cooking with the vegetables I grow in my garden.

What is a postpartum doula?

What is a postpartum doula?

Most simply, a postpartum doula comes into your home to care for you in the first days and weeks of motherhood - the "fourth trimester". Rather than taking over infant care, a doula works alongside your family as you bond with and enjoy your new little one. As your postpartum doula, I will be a peaceful and informed presence in your home, caring for you during this challenging but beautiful season of life. I will be responsive to your needs and hopes.

What does this practically look like?

My work in your home could take a myriad of forms! It all depends on what your needs and desires are. As your doula I can...

  • Help you build confidence in breastfeeding and connect you with local resources if challenges arise

  • Take care of your dishes, laundry and meal prep

  • Listen as you process your birth story and postpartum experience

  • Support you to recover physically on your own timeline

  • Prepare sitz baths and other forms of self-care

  • Engage with older children as they adjust to a new baby

  • Empower you to thrive as new parents

Why should I hire a postpartum doula?

Why should I hire a postpartum doula?

The better question is, why wouldn't you hire a postpartum doula! Far from being a luxury, postpartum care ensures the wellbeing of the mother, which is the best way to ensure a thriving baby.

Throughout history and across most cultures, the first weeks of a woman's postpartum period have been recognized as a special time to rest, recover and bond with a new baby. In contrast, our culture promotes the self-reliant, nuclear family, as well as short or nonexistent parental leaves. This can be a recipe for exhaustion, loneliness and unnecessary anxiety for new parents.

A lack of support during the postpartum period is associated with lower success with breastfeeding and higher rates of postpartum mood disorders.

A postpartum doula aims to bridge that cultural gap. I am  a gentle presence, a listening ear, an extra set of hands, and a wealth of local resources and information. Let yourself be taken care of, so that you can best take care of your baby.

It is the wise woman, not the weak woman, who recognizes her need for postpartum care.
